This Just In!

Face-to-face classes resumed on Monday, May 6, 2024, after a freak storm tore off the roof of the Grade 2 block and mangled power lines. Subsequent to the storm, classes had been moved online but thankfully as of Monday, the students were able to get back into the classroom for some hands-on tutelage from their teachers.

According to Gallup Inc's 2023 Global Law and Order Report, Jamaica is considered one of the safest countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. Ranking in this category with 75 out of 100 points, we are among countries such as New Zealand, Costa Rica and Cyprus. This information was first published in an article by Breaking Travel News (BTN), which is a respected website which posts news, interviews and new developments happening in the travel and tourism industry.

Surprisingly, Jamaica ranked ahead of US territory Puerto Rico which scored 74 points. Following Puerto Rico was Brazil with 73 points; Argentina received 70 points; Mexico 66; Venezuela 66; Dominican Republic 64; Peru 61;and Ecuador 59 points.

In publishing the information, BTN noted:

"The report gauges people’s sense of personal security and their own experiences with crime and law enforcement. Results are based on nationally representative, probability-based samples among adult populations, aged 15 and older, in 141 countries and territories throughout 2022."

The highest ranked country was Tajikistan with 96 out of a 100. The United States, Canada and the United Kingdom all scored 83 points. So, high up on the scale but they could not beat Finland which scored 92 points.

In seeking further background on the report BTN interviewed Mr Delano Seiveright, who is Jamaica's senior advisor and strategist in the Ministry of Tourism. Although Mr. Seiveright did not wish to comment on the report directly, he noted:

"...the safety of every Jamaican and every visitor matters greatly. Notably, the crime rates against visitors remains extremely low, hovering at around 0.01 percent and already our visitor numbers are double digit percentages ahead of 2019 and 2022. Jamaica is a buzz like never before and millions have visited over the years without incident."

Indeed, Jamaica seems to have become a haven for noted celebrities such as Burna Boy, Nigerian music sensation who has visited the island several times this year. Other celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Dua Lipa, Cardi B with her husband Offset have been spotted vacationing on the island.
