The police are reporting that *sixteen (16) more Haitians have been accosted and taken into police custody in Portland on Wednesday (May 22) morning. Among them were a pregnant woman and children.
The police believe they are members of a group which illegally landed at a beach in Hectors River on Sunday (May 19) night.
Reports are that these *sixteen (16) Haitians were intercepted by the police shortly after 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, when the vehicle they were travelling in, a black Nissan Serena mini bus developed a flat tire, along the Dolphin Bay main road.Passers-by, who reportedly saw strange people exiting the vehicle, alerted the police.
On Monday, a previous group of eight (8) were apprehended by the authorities. The police were tipped off to the whereabouts of these Haitians in separate locations in Hectors River.
It is believed that these eight (8) were also among the group which landed illegally at a beach in Hectors River, Portland, late Sunday night.
It is still unclear how many Haitians have landed and whether any are still at large.
In January, 10 Haitians, who were picked up along a roadway in Hectors River, Portland, were sent home less than eight hours after receiving medical treatment.
